[환경포커스=필리핀] 기후위기와 생물다양성 보전이 국회의 주요 정책 과제로 떠오른 가운데, 아시아·태평양 지역 차세대 생태학자들이 필리핀에 모여 지속가능한 생태계 관리와 국제협력 방안을 모색한다.

 

사단법인 환경생태기상ICT융합포럼과 한국장기생태연구네트워크(KLTER)는 7월 15일부터 21일까지 필리핀 라구나주 필리핀대학교 로스바뇨스(UPLB)에서 '제5회 국제생태학교(International Ecology School·IES 2026)'를 개최한다고 밝혔다.

 

올해 국제생태학교는 '회복력 있는 생태계와 공동의 미래(Resilient Ecologies, Shared Futures)'를 주제로 기후변화와 생물다양성 위기에 대응하기 위한 최신 연구와 현장 교육 프로그램을 운영한다.

 

참가자들은 국제쌀연구소(IRRI)의 지속가능 농업 연구시설을 비롯해 마킬링산 산림보호구역, 팍상한강 유역, 산파블로 지역 등을 방문해 열대 생태계와 자연자원 관리 사례를 직접 살펴볼 예정이다.

 

이번 행사에는 한국, 필리핀, 대만, 몽골, 베트남, 중국, 태국 등 7개국 장기생태연구네트워크(LTER) 소속 교수와 연구자, 대학(원)생 등 약 65명이 참가한다. 강연과 학생 연구발표, 현장 생태조사, 토론 프로그램을 통해 기후변화와 생물다양성 분야 연구성과를 공유하고 국제 공동연구 기반 확대도 추진한다.

 

행사에는 태국, 필리핀, 몽골, 베트남 등 아시아 지역 장기생태연구 전문가들이 강사진으로 참여해 강의와 현장 지도를 맡는다.

 

국제생태학교는 2022년 태국을 시작으로 대만, 한국(서울·제주), 몽골에 이어 올해 필리핀에서 다섯 번째 열린다. 아시아·태평양 지역 차세대 생태 연구자 양성과 국제 협력 네트워크 구축을 목표로 매년 개최되고 있다.

 

행사 주최 측은 "기후위기와 생물다양성 감소는 한 국가만으로 해결할 수 없는 과제"라며 "국제생태학교가 차세대 연구자들이 함께 배우고 협력하는 국제 플랫폼으로 자리매김할 수 있도록 지속적으로 발전시켜 나갈 계획"이라고 밝혔다.

LAGUNA, Philippines — As climate change and biodiversity conservation become increasingly important policy priorities for the National Assembly of Korea, the next generation of ecologists from across the Asia-Pacific region has gathered in the Philippines to explore sustainable ecosystem management and strengthen international scientific cooperation.

The Environment-Ecology-Meteorology ICT Convergence Forum and the Korean Long-Term Ecological Research Network (KLTER) are hosting the 5th International Ecology School (IES 2026) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) in Laguna from July 15 to 21.

Under the theme "Resilient Ecologies, Shared Futures," this year's program focuses on the latest scientific research and field-based education addressing climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable ecosystem management.

Participants will visit major ecological research sites, including the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve, the Pagsanjan River watershed, and the San Pablo area to examine tropical ecosystems and natural resource management practices firsthand.

Approximately 65 professors, researchers, and graduate students representing Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) networks from South Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, Mongolia, Vietnam, China, and Thailand are taking part in the program. Through lectures, student research presentations, field investigations, and discussions, participants will share scientific findings while expanding opportunities for international collaborative research.

Leading experts in long-term ecological research from Thailand, the Philippines, Mongolia, Vietnam, and other Asian countries are serving as lecturers and field instructors throughout the program.

The International Ecology School was first launched in Thailand in 2022, followed by events in Taiwan, South Korea (Seoul and Jeju), and Mongolia. The 2026 program marks its fifth edition and reflects the continued effort to nurture young ecological scientists while strengthening international research networks across the Asia-Pacific region.

"The climate crisis and biodiversity loss are global challenges that cannot be addressed by any single country alone," the organizers said. "We will continue developing the International Ecology School as a collaborative international platform where the next generation of researchers can learn, exchange ideas, and build long-term partnerships."
